Apple Announces its Apps of the Year

As the end of the year approaches, Apple has released its iTunes Rewind selections for the best music, apps, TV shows, movies, books, and podcasts of 2011. iTunes Rewind reveals Apple’s top selections as chosen by its editorial staff, plus the best selling apps of the year.
Apple’s iPad app of the year is the photo-editing application Snapseed, which I also thought was the most polished, feature-rich editing app of the many available in the App Store. Apple’s pick is no surprise – Snapseed is one amazing app. EA’s third-person shooter Dead Space was chosen as the best iPad game of the year and touted as a stunning iOS exclusive that plays like a full-blown console title.
Professional DJ app djay was one of the runners-up for best app, as was Jamie Oliver’s fully-featured recipe app, Jamie’s Recipes. Contre Jour HD, arguably one of the most engrossing games of the year was one of the runners-up for game of the year, and the original title Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP was the other.
Unsurprisingly, Angry Birds was the best selling app of the year, taking the first, third, and fifth spots (with Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio). Apple’s word processing app Pages took the second place spot, Garageband came in fourth, and Penultimate and Fruit Ninja HD snagged the sixth and seventh spots.
As for the iPhone, Apple’s top pick was everyone’s favorite photo app, Instagram. The ultra-popular freemium game Tiny Tower was chosen as the game of the year, with Tiny Wings and Touchgrind BMX as runners-up. Mashup music video creator VidRhythm and indie band discovery app Band of the Day were the runners-up for best app.
If you have yet to download and try out these apps, any one of them is a great value for the money. You won’t go wrong with one of the amazing games that Apple picked, and for music lovers or photographers, Snapseed and djay are must-have apps.
