Apple Seeding iOS 5.0.1 to Select Users

iOS 5.0.1 was released to developers last week, and now Apple is seeding the update to select end users for further testing. Some customers who spoke to Apple Care about problems with battery life have received emails inviting them to participate in an early release of the update.

The update includes a fix for poor battery life that iPhone 4S users are experiencing, plus Siri improvements for Australian users, multitasking gestures for the first generation iPad, and an important fix for the Smart Cover security flaw that was revealed last month.

In the documentation, Apple warns that participants will be unable to downgrade their devices back to iOS 5.0, but will be able to update to the final release version in a few weeks.

Along with the early release of the new update, Apple Stores have also received official memos on how to deal with battery life issues. Stores are being instructed not to replace phones with poor battery life until the software fix, so if you’re one of those unlucky iPhone 4S users, you’ll just have to keep a charger handy for the next few weeks.
