Aviary Releases First iPad SDK

Aviary Releases First iPad SDK

You might remember Aviary from their first release a few years back with a suite of media editing tools that many billed as being ‘Adobe Lite’. Allowing you to perform image editing directly within a web browser as well as more advanced features like pattern generation, image effects, image markup, screen capture and audio editing, the Aviary tools were a welcome addition –except that they used loads and loads of Flash. Not so good for those of us running iOS.

Fortunately, this is no longer the case. Aviary has now released an iPad SDK packaged with a suite of available APIs.

The iPad interface is first available in the Pic Collage iPad app as well as the latest update to Flickr, but I suspect this is just the beginning.

Aviary made the switch to this new platform after Apple announced their lack of desire to work with the company. They join the ranks of a growing number of companies no longer using or supporting Flash as they release nearly all of those developers and commit their attentions and time to this new SDK development.

This change also marks a change in how Aviary does business. Instead of being a destination, they will be the power and technology behind other apps and what they are able to do. This is good news for those of you developing apps that might benefit from this image manipulation capability. with over 1 million users connecting with mobile devices and the SDK, this appears to be a model that works for them.

A nice touch for developers is the inclusion of a set of best practice tips and tricks that should make working with the SDK entirely less painful. And for those of you doing cross-platform development, there is an Android SDK available as well.
