Magazine Publishers Embrace Newsstand

After iOS 5 dropped yesterday, the App Store was flooded with new magazine apps, nearly all of them offering in-app subscriptions.

It is no surprise that publishers are clambering to have a prime spot on Apple’s Newsstand rack considering the iPad is has been the number one selling tablet by a wide margin since its inception.

Some of the more popular and familiar magazines hit Newsstand early, like Wired and Popular Science, but by now, you will have noticed that the app is being flooded with new periodicals every hour. Digital magazine developer Mag+ recently reported that 12 of their clients have added titles to Newsstand, including Popular Science+, Popular Photography+, Maxim+ and more.  Martha Stuart Living Omni Media has announced the addition of Living and Everyday Food to Newsstand.  W=News media publisher Nomad Editions is adding all five of its titles- Uncorked, Real Eats, BodySmart, U+Me and Wide Screen- to Apple’s virtual magazine and newspaper kiosk.

Today, the App Store has been opened up to the UK and we are beginning to see the trickling of some popular titles, such as Digital Camera World, Retro Gamer, Elle and Sci-Fi Now.  In fact, the UK titles are quickly reaching 100 (possibly more by the time you read this).

Bing that I am a magazine junky, my idea of a great night is getting a slice of pizza and spending an hour at my local magazine shop, Newsstand is a dangerous thing. The idea of getting your favorite magazines delivered right to your iPad at a fraction of the retail price is just too much to handle. I may go broke thanks to Newsstand.
