New iOS 5.1 Beta 3 Points to New iPads and Facebook Integration

iPad 3 references hidden within the code of iOS 5.1 beta 3

New versions of the iOS beta often contain revealing information buried in the code, and  the iOS 5.1 Beta 3 is no different. In the code, there are mentions of two iPad 3 names, J1AP and J2AP, plus several references to Facebook.

What does this mean? Apple is preparing for the release of the iPad 3, and the two different names very likely refer to the WiFi and the 3G versions of the tablet.

It does not seem to indicate or refer to dual versions of the iPad – a mid-range and a high-ranged tablet – as was rumored by Digitimes earlier this month. In fact, the addition of only two codes seems to invalidate that theory all together.

As for the continued mentions of Facebook, it could indicate a partnership between Apple and the social networking site, similar to the agreement that Apple has with Twitter.

This is significant because iOS 4 was originally meant to have Facebook integration, an idea that was scrapped when the two companies were able to come to an agreement. Have Facebook and Apple resolved their differences, or is it lingering code?

Apple has been known to provide false information within its beta code just to throw sleuths off, so there’s really no way to tell. Of course, we already know that the next generation iPad is in the works, so the only real wildcard is Facebook integration. It may or may not come in Apple’s next OS.
