Showtime Steals a Page from HBO and Releases iPad App

HBO Go was released in April of 2011, and within months, the app proved to be a success. HBO’s iPad app allows HBO subscribers to watch premium shows and movies on demand, in any location where there is WiFi or 3G access.

Now Showtime, another premium television provider, has decided to release its own app called “Showtime Anytime.”

The app works like HGO Go does, providing unlimited access to full length Showtime shows and movies. That means Dexter on demand! And Shameless, Californication, The Borgias, and all of the other great Showtime programs. The app doesn’t specifically advertise allowing you to watch TV outside of your home network, but it say that you can play content on “any computer,” so it does appear to work that way.

Showtime, like HBO, is providing access to the streaming service through participating cable providers. The service is currently available for subscribers with AT&T U-verse, Comcast Xfinity, and Verizon FiOS. It’s a free addition to an already existing Showtime subscription. Those of us with Dish Network, Time Warner, Charter, and more are, unfortunately, out of luck until later this year.

Those of you who are lucky enough to have one of the participating cable companies can go download the Showtime Anywhere app from the App Store for free.
