Sonic CD for iPhone and iPad Now Available

Those of you familiar with me or my writing will know that I am a sucker for nostalgia, particularly geek-stalgia (if I can coin that term). So when I learned that Sonic CD would be released as a new ported-to-iOS game my heart jumped up a little and smiled. I played Sonic back when it was released in 1993 on my Sega Genesis. Scratch that. I ROCKED Sonic back then, and I intend to rock it again now!
Ports of old games are usually pretty mediocre at best, but not this one. Sonic CD is good. It’s really good.
While it was a little disheartening to learn that I now suck at this game (I decided to cut myself some slack given that it’s been a decade or two since I last played it), I was basically mesmerized by the FPS and really classic styling. The controls feel natural and the game is easy to play.
For those of you not familiar with Sonic, shame on you. The game itself is a very familiar platform-style experience where you run from start to finish through a variety of maps collecting rings and fighting bad guys. Sonic CD does have a few twists and turns not seen in other Sonic games, like time travel. I don’t want to give too much away, but sufficed to say there are robots involved and when is that a bad thing?
Riddled with achievements to collect and leaderboards to climb, it is virtually guaranteed that once you load up Sonic CD it will be difficult for others to tear your attention away. The problem (for everybody other thank you) is that once you play through once, you get the opportunity to have another go as Tails, Sonic’s high-flying companion.
Not to worry, for those of you who are purists the soundtrack is available in both the US and Japanese versions!
Sonic CD is currently available for download from the App Store for the ‘worth every penny’ cost of US $1.99.
